Roman Ruins of Tuscany

The other great attraction located in Tuscany besides the Leaning Tower of Pisa is the Roman ruins. If you have seen the tower then you have seen the greatest architectural building in the world not come and see the greatest archeological discovery in history. The story goes that about seven years ago, a national train company wanted to build an electrical railroad station in the flatlands approximately 500 yard from the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The location was chosen because it is one place in Tuscany that is not eye pleasing but the clay soil is said to have powers of the swamp. Clay would be perfect to preserve the wood that would be used to build the station. So they received the go ahead to begin construction but as the rail road workers began to dig their area they came across about 30 pieces of in almost perfect condition wooden boats that were estimated at being build around the years 200 BC to 500 AD.

After full examinations of the boats were conducted they uncovered 1000 amphora’s that were used to carry treasures from Africa to Italy through of the country’s busiest harbors. They left the boats were they found them and decided to build the station at another location.

The land there today is in a very swampy area that seven feet of water must be constantly drained by the use of pumps. The plan is for the ruins to have their own place to rest in a museum but most say that won’t happen in our lifetime, it would take years and years to dig up the ruins and preserve them and then transport them. Right now they have a rustic appeal because they were left where they were found.
